What Zapier announced will be the "default" in the short term. The future is clear: AI fluency will soon be a requirement for all new tech hires, irrespective of the function. Companies already embracing this standard (like my employer) are gaining a significant competitive edge. The best thing you can do for your tech career is to evolve into the “AI native” category—not just by following every AI headline, but by critically examining every aspect of your work and integrating AI into it. “The future is already here — it’s just not evenly distributed yet.”

I had a dinner party at my house the other night. A good friend of mine who runs Motion Capital in New Zealand was telling me how impressed he was with the roll out of Zapier s new AI features, in particular MCP. “Scary good” was how he described it. They went from doing some api based integrations to figuring out just how much they can do with Zapier. To Wade Foster and the Zapier team, kudos! The hard work is paying off in buckets, couldn’t be happier for you.

My dad was the original tech geek in my life. When I was a kid, I’d watch him down in the basement, perched at his giant IBM, running Quattro Pro (pre-Excel days!!) surrounded by a dot-matrix printer and a stack of floppy disks. To me, he was the KING of computers. He’s the reason I started using a computer so young. Fast forward to today… He’s now a volunteer leader for his local Community Emergency Response Team (proud daughter over here!!), but tech? Let’s just say he’s starring in his own personal telenovela of tech frustrations. He’s vented to so many people, and the conversations are full of dramatic highs and lows... because he doesn’t fully understand the problem, or quite frankly, the solutions available to him. So when he came to me with his spreadsheet + form setup meltdown, I (lovingly) told him, “You need to move from Microsoft to Google and use Zapier for the little extras you're looking for." (No shade, Microsoft, still love you, but Daddy-o needs Google Forms). He looked at me like I was speaking a foreign tongue. Like I had been POSSESSED. So what did I do? I pulled up ChatGPT and had it write him step-by-step instructions. He sat there watching, a mix of awe and HORROR on his face. This is the same man who once taught me about technology. And now, the world has moved so flipping fast, he’s been left in the dust. Since he once introduced me to tech, it's only fair that I now get to do the same for him... Roles shift. But love, and helping each other figure it all out, stays the same. ❤️

This week, Zapier rolled out a new expectation - 100% of our new hires must be fluent in AI. But that doesn't mean we expect you to be there yet! When you enter our process, you can expect that we'll talk about your experience with AI up until this point, and you and your recruiter can discuss the expectations for AI usage and AI fluency in the role you're applying for. But we'll also share AI training materials, guidance, and practice exercises so whether you land at Zapier or not, the process helps to build your skills and make you a come competitive candidate for ANY company. If you end up joining Zapier, you can also expect an onboarding process that builds tangible AI skills while also helping you master our AI orchestration platform. Personally, one of my favorite things about Zapier is our transparency around what we're looking for so I love that we're being up front about the skills we're looking for here. And I also think by adding AI fluency to our list of skills, we're expanding who might be a great fit - your AI expertise might just give you an edge and offset some other areas for growth!
